Austin Wiley’s start to the 2018-19 campaign could be put on hold for the time being.
Auburn coach Bruce Pearl said at SEC Media Day on Wednesday that Wiley could miss the Nov. 6 opener at Auburn Arena vs. South Alabama.
Pearl said that Wiley has been dealing with a foot injury for over a week now, and it is likely that he will miss a couple more weeks. Wiley is currently in a walking boot, but it should be removed in the next week.
There is not guarantee he will miss the opener though, and once his boot is removed, then he will work his way back onto the court. Pearl also said that the worst case scenario is that Wiley would be back early in the season.
"He's handling it really good," senior guard Bryce Brown told AL.com's Tom Green. "He won't be out for long. You'll see him whenever he's available, so he's been doing really good. We're lifting him up; he's lifting us up."
Wiley sat out last season due to eligibility concerns along with Danjel Purifoy. They are both looking to make a comeback on the court for the first time in over a year.
Wiley enrolled early from high school during the 2016-17 campaign to play during conference play. He averaged nearly 9 points per game and almost 5 rebounds as a freshman.
Wiley is widely regarded as the highest rated high school recruit that Auburn has ever signed and he is excepted to start at center this season.
