SGA Vice President Schyler Burney speaks at SGA Senate in Auburn, Ala. on Monday, April 23, 2018.

At the Student Government Association's Senate meeting on Nov. 26, senators discussed the possibility of revising the academic honesty policy and supporting a campaign for a National Pan-Hellenic Council Legacy Plaza.

Max Zinner, graduate school senator, presented a bill for discussion that would alter Title XII, the student academic honesty code policy.

According to Zinner, the bill would present information in a more linear fashion, from when the accusation is submitted to the final decision. Zinner added that it would simplify the process for members of the Academic Honesty Committee as well as students accused of academic dishonesty.

Zinner said the bill would put all of the rights and responsibilities of students, such as the right to an advisor and the burden of proof falling on the accuser, in one section.

“If you are ever involved in the academic honesty policy, you can go directly to chapter 1203 and see all the rights and responsibilities of students in this process,” Zinner said.

Ada Ruth Huntley, College of Human Sciences senator, presented with Matthew Carroll, College of Business senator, a bill that would express the Senate’s support for a campaign to build a National Pan-Hellenic Council Legacy Plaza.

The National Pan-Hellenic Council consists of nine historically African-American Greek-letter sororities and fraternities, sometimes referred to as the “Divine Nine.”

“We’ve already had a lot of organizations on campus supporting this project, so we would be adding SGA’s name to the list as well,” Huntley said.

Carroll said he thinks adding a NPHC Legacy Plaza would be a great culture change for Auburn and is definitely needed.

The University of Mississippi is currently the only school in the SEC to have a National Pan-Hellenic Council Legacy Plaza.

The bills will be voted on at the Senate’s Dec. 3 meeting, its final meeting of the semester.
