Auburn's own Robyn Benton has been named the SEC Freshman of the Week for women’s basketball, the league office announced Tuesday.
Benton is coming off a game in which she hit the game-winning basket against Vanderbilt to complete a 20-point comeback for the Tigers.
Auburn was trailing late 70-69 and Benton drove to the basket before throwing up a shot that rattled around the rim for what seemed like an eternity before falling to give the Tigers the lead with 8.6 seconds left.
Benton made the free throw to give the Tigers a two-point lead that would stick as Vanderbilt missed a shot at the buzzer, completing Auburn’s largest comeback in school history.
The freshman has played a big part in Auburn’s offense, coming off the bench as a spark plug. Auburn has seen an uptick in bench scoring this season with Benton playing a big role in the success.
Benton scored an SEC-high eight points off the bench Thursday, with five of those coming in the second half to help complete the comeback.
The Tigers host No. 25 Texas A&M Thursday night at 7:30 p.m. CT on SEC Network.
