The Auburn University Board of Trustees expressed support for a multi-million dollar football performance facility at the meeting on Friday, and head coach Gus Malzahn attended the meeting to thank the trustees in their support.

"Dr. Leath, board of trustees, I really appreciate your support for this project," Malzahn said. "It is big not just now, currently, but more importantly for the future and will allow us to continue to have a good chance to compete for championships, so this is really big."

Board member Charles McCrary said the facility was discussed in an earlier committee meeting and there is a general consensus among the board that the facility needs to be built.

"We all agree we need to do it," McCrary said.

No formal action was taken.

The facility is expected to cost about $80 million, and Malzahan has personally pledged $2 million for the facility. The athletic department and Tigers Unlimited are currently raising money for the facility.

Athletic director Allen Greene first proposed the idea for a football operations facility September 2018.

In an informational report on campus projects, officials said there is 1.3 million square feet of construction.
