National Weather Service issues tornado watch for Auburn-Opelika area

Story updated at 9:05 a.m.

The National Weather Service issued a tornado watch for the Auburn-Opelika area on Tuesday that will last until 1 p.m.

The tornado watch classification means tornadoes, damaging winds up to 60 mph and hail are possible.

Forecasters and experts are advising Alabamians to prepare now for severe weather and have a plan in place for taking shelter.

Greene Hall — located in the College of Veterinary Medicine — and Ralph Draughon Library are opened whenever a tornado watch is issued for Auburn University, day or night, for those who do not have a suitable place to shelter.

Campus Safety and Security said it will have precautions in place to help ensure social distancing.
