I like to think that all someone really needs in this world are books, coffee, wine and friends. Friends come and go as the years pass, but luckily the first three can consistently be found at Well Red.

Well Red, while still relatively new to the Auburn area, has won the honor of being the Plainsman’s Choice Best Coffee Shop for 2021. Whether it’s drip coffee in the morning or a decaf americano in the evening, the blends available are undeniably amazing, truly all one could ask for in a drink.

As noted, however, Well Red is so much more than coffee. As much as we don’t want to admit it, coffee shops really aren’t about the coffee or tea or whatever people that don’t drink coffee get — it’s the friendships you make along the way.

Specifically, the friendships formed in mid-January under blankets on Well Red’s back porch when it’s too cold to spend time outside, but weekly coffee trips will not be stopped for anything.

It would be a disservice, however, not to highlight the other beverages and items that Well Red has to offer. Those, after all, are what distinguish it from everywhere else in town.

If it has been a long week or a celebration is in order, there is a lengthy selection of white, red and sparkling wine. There’s something about sitting back in a comfortable chair, sipping on a sparkling rose that just makes all the grueling work hours worth it.

Desserts at Well Red are also a delicacy. In the morning, cinnamon rolls are freshly baked in the back kitchen. The menu also changes frequently, as different cakes, cookies and scones are tested out. I personally have never had one I didn’t like, and I have tried a lot.

To top it all off, the number of books tucked away in the quaint house is absolutely incredible. From children’s books to non-fiction and mystery, there truly is something for everyone. I especially recommend checking out the used-book section near the front entrance. You never know what you may find.

I could continue to describe in words what Well Red has to offer, but to really experience it — walking through the door, the smell of baked goods in the air, chatting with the barista then sinking into your seat — you need to go there on your own. Just hop in your car and don’t be afraid to get creative with a parking spot. It’s worth it.
