Opelika police said they have charged a man with assault in connection with a shooting early Tuesday morning where a man was suffering from a gunshot wound after a shooting on Star Street in Opelika.

Officers were dispatched to the 2200 block of Star Street in Opelika at about 1:36 a.m. Tuesday after receiving calls of shots fired. At about the same time, officers were also dispatched to the Whataburger at 2501 Gateway Dr. in response to a man suffering from a gunshot wound. He was transported to East Alabama Medical Center for treatment and sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

A police investigation determined the man at Whataburger was involved in the shooting on Star Street and had been shot after an altercation.

The Lee County SWAT team was sent to Star Street where they located Charles Mitchell Wesson, 52, of Opelika, who had barricaded himself in a shed on the property where the shooting occurred. Wesson was taken into custody and charged with first-degree assault.

Police said the case is still under investigation and that those with additional information should contact Opelika detectives at 334-705-5220 or call the Opelika Police Department's Secret Witness Hotline at 334-745-8665.
