Auburn upset the No. 4 Tennessee Volunteers 71-61 on Thursday night, the first win against a top-5 team since 1997 for the program. Aicha Coulibaly was the standout player for the Tigers, scoring a team-high 26 points in the game.
The Tigers were able to capitalize off of 12 Tennessee turnovers in the first half, scoring 17 points off turnovers. At halftime, the Tigers were up 39-28, staying under the basket to convert rebounds into points.
During the third quarter, the Vols were able to regain the lead, with the Tigers following close behind. Mar'shawn Bostick managed to hit a buzzer-beater at the end of the third quarter, cutting the Tennessee lead to one point, 51-50.
Bostic advanced the team's position with three steals in the fourth quarter alone, enabling the Tigers to grab the lead once more. As the clock ticked, hearts raced as the Tigers maintained a narrow lead. Four successful free throws at one point put the Vols within one point of their 19th win of the season, but Auburn continued to knock down shots down the stretch.
When the clock hit zero, Auburn had won and fans stormed the court for the historic victory.
