Auburn run-rules Jacksonville State in mid-week matchup

No. 21 Auburn run-ruled Jacksonville State 10-0 Wednesday night at JSU to bring its season record to 10-1.

Maddie Penta got the start and the win for the Tigers in the circle, staying undefeated with a record of 5-0. Penta cruised through the JSU lineup for six complete innings, allowing no runs, two hits, and striking out seven while also giving up no walks.

The Tigers struck first in the top of the first inning, scoring one run to put Auburn up 1-0. Makayla Packer hit a lead-off single to start the game. She was then hit in by a Nelia Peralta single to put up the Tigers’ lone run.

The Auburn bats then went silent for two innings, keeping the game score at 1-0 until the top of the fourth inning.

To lead off the top of the fourth inning, Jessie Blaine hit a solo blast to put the Tigers up 2-0 with no outs. Denver Bryant then hit a two-out single to keep the lineup moving, and was rewarded when Carlee McCondichie hit a double, scoring Bryant for the second Auburn run of the inning and the third of the game.

Penta did run into some trouble in the bottom of the fourth inning. Jacksonville had a runner reach on a one-out error by the Tigers. Penta then gave up a single, putting runners on first and third with two outs for the Gamecocks. However,  Penta worked a pop-out to the infield to shut down any JSU momentum.

Auburn had a huge sixth inning to set itself up for the run-rule win. Blaine led off the inning once again with a lead-off single. A single by Lindsey Garcia and a double by Aubrey Lisenby scored two more runs for the Tigers, all with no outs. Bryant, McCondichie and Packer all singled to score another run, bringing Auburn’s total to 6-0. A Sydney Cox walk, a Peralta single and throwing errors by JSU put four more runs across the plate for a score of 10-0.

Because of a heavy-offensive game for the Tigers, many of the players had good nights at the plate for Auburn.

Packer led the way for Auburn, going 3-for-4 (all singles) and collecting an RBI. Peralta had another great game, going 2-for-4 with two singles and collecting three RBIs. Blaine (home run and one RBI), McCondichie (double, single and one RBI) and Bryant all went 2-for-3 at the plate. While only collecting one hit, Lisenby made it count by collecting a double and two RBIs.

Auburn will next return home for the Plainsman Invite, which it will open against ULM on Friday, Feb. 25, at 2:30 p.m. CST.
