Auburn falls short of comeback, bounces back in game two

Game 1: Pittsburgh

Auburn was upset by Pitt 8-7 and fell short of a miraculous comeback. After the top of the second inning it looked as if Auburn could potentially pull away and get another victory. This fell through shortly afterwards. Pitt put on seven runs in the bottom of the second which was too much to overcome.

Auburn kept battling until the very end. Nelia Peralta brought one run back for Auburn in the third inning with an RBI triple. Peralta also scored later in the inning thanks to a sacrifice fly from Carlee McCondichie.

In the third and fourth innings, Auburn put up five runs over the two innings which cut the lead to one. However, Pitt was able to shut down the Tigers for the rest of the game.

In the first meeting between these two programs, Pitt survived and got the victory. Meanwhile Auburn was defeated to the shock of many. Pitt had gotten blown out by Indiana in yesterday's matchup. Pitt also struggled last season, winning only 14 games.

Pitt picked up its second win of the season to be 2-1 while Auburn took its first loss of the year to drop to 2-1. Auburn meanwhile could not sulk, as they had Indiana coming to play in just a short amount of time after the conclusion of this game.

Game 2: Indiana

After an upset lost to Pitt, Auburn got a nice bounce back victory against the Hoosiers of Indiana University. Auburn defeated Indiana 9-0 in the teams fourth meeting all time. This was the first meeting since 2016. Auburn took the lead in the first and never looked back.

Indiana had trouble hitting off ace pitcher Maddie Penta. Penta ended her day with 11 strikeouts. Shelby Lowe tossed the final inning of the game — striking out two and completing the shutout.

Indiana also struggled fielding, with four errors. In the top of the seventh inning, the Tigers added five runs to their lead to put the nail in the coffin of the Hoosiers. Even in the pouring rain, Auburn was able to limit errors and close out the day.

Sophomore Annabella Widra hit a home run, and junior KK McCrary led the Tigers with three RBI.

Auburn's record improved to 3-1 on the young season while the Hoosiers dropped their first game of the season to drop to 2-1.

Auburn will take on the Illinois Fighting Illini tomorrow at 11:30 a.m. CST in Clearwater Fla., to close out the Clearwater Leadoff Classic.
