No. 25 Auburn softball lost to No. 12 Texas A&M 5-1 Friday night. A late rally attempt by Auburn in the seventh inning ultimately fell short as the Aggies took a 1-0 lead in the weekend series.

“We had great effort,” said head coach Mickey Dean. “Our execution wasn’t quite where we needed it to be. We didn’t get any runs in our two bases loaded opportunities. We are making mistakes in the circle that we normally don’t make. We have to figure that out. We didn’t finish our opportunities at the plate or in the circle.”

Auburn loaded the bases in the seventh with the tying run up to bat. A strikeout by KK McCrary and a flyout by Rose Roach brought an end to the game and ended any potential rally.

Auburn only managed six hits on the night, two of which came in the seventh when Auburn loaded up the bases with only one out. Annabelle Widra went a perfect 2-of-2 at the plate on the night, and Roach drove in the only Auburn run with a single in the third inning.

Auburn left a total of seven base runners stranded in the game, having the bases loaded two separate times in the game, but could not break through the Texas A&M defense, only striking out four times on the night.

After giving up a first inning single, starting pitcher Shelby Lowe retired the next 10 Texas A&M batters until a solo home run in the fourth tied the game up 1-1. The Aggies notched another three home runs in the game which accounted for all of their five runs.

Lowe was given the loss on the night to move to 4-2 on the season. She was credited with three runs off of only three hits with a single walk, while striking out three batters. Freshman Malayna Tamborra and sophomore Emmah Rolfe each saw relief work in the sixth inning, with Tamborra allowing two hits and one home run.

Auburn will look to tie up the series Saturday. The first pitch is set for 4:30 p.m. CT. airing on SEC Network+.
