Josiah Gilbert was named the SEC’s Golfer of the Week after earning the first individual win of his collegiate career on Monday at the Valero Texas Collegiate, the league office announced Wednesday.
Gilbert shot 66-67-71 (-12) to tie for first in the 90-man field competing at TPC San Antonio. His cumulative total, 12-under, set a new personal best for low tournament score.
“Felt good to put myself in the position I did this week,” Gilbert said following the win Monday afternoon. “It’s great reassurance that I’m doing the right things and I’ll be in contention more and more by doing those little things right. It’s something that’ll be great to build on for the rest of the season.”
At the end of the third round of the Valero Texas Collegiate, Gilbert and Virginia’s Ben James were tied at 12-under after 54 holes of play. The duo was forced to a playoff since a future PGA Tour start was on the line. James won the playoff on the first hole.
Gilbert led the Tigers to a third-place finish at 19-under overall. Auburn finished ahead of five other ranked programs, including top-10 squads Tennessee and Vanderbilt.
Gilbert and The Tigers will return to the Lone Star state for the Ben Hogan Collegiate Monday, Sept. 30 through Tuesday, Oct. 1 at Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth, TX.
