Mayor Anders addresses officer involved shooting
Story updated Sept. 5 at 11:16 a.m.
During the Auburn City Council meeting on Sept. 3, Mayor Ron Anders Jr. made a statement about the shooting before opening the floor to citizens.
“I want to take a moment to address the officer-involved shooting that occurred here in our community last night," Anders began. "We have a tremendous group of men and women who serve and protect the city of Auburn, and often they do that at great personal risk and in circumstances that many of us could ever imagine. As standard procedure, the investigation into this matter has been turned over to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency. Our officers have been and will continue to be cooperative with that investigation. It is always a grave matter when a life is lost and so of course we are very mindful of the pain that the families of those involved are feeling, and our thoughts and prayers are with them. But based on the advice of the City Attorney’s Office and as been our longstanding procedure, we will not comment directly on the facts of this incident but will allow the facts to be developed and reviewed as part of a formal investigation.”

At 9:16 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 2, a member of the Auburn Police Department fatally shot a 21-year-old man while responding to a call at The Magnolia at Auburn apartment complex on West Longleaf Drive.
The deceased victim’s name is Amari Young. Young was shot after allegedly forcibly entering an apartment that was occupied by an APD officer. Young was armed with a handgun, and he was shot by the officer and later pronounced dead.
No officers were injured, and Young was the only documented casualty from the incident, which was reported at 11:00 p.m that night. The report specifically includes that the officer’s actions which resulted in Young’s death were not motivated by “hate bias.”
Later on the night of the incident, the APD requested special agents with the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s State Bureau of Investigation to launch an investigation into the “officer-involved shooting.”
On the APD end, the case is closed and administratively cleared. The SBI investigation is ongoing, and its findings are being processed through the Lee County District Attorney’s Office.
