Auburn traveled to face undefeated Cal last night but struggles shooting from the field led to a 63-59 loss.
The Tigers did a lot of great things defensively turning Cal over 29 times. The Tigers finished with 12 steals and 4 blocks in an impressive defensive effort — potentially something head coach Johnnie Harris and her squad could build off of.
The Tigers couldn't get it going from the field shooting 36.8% and only connecting on one three on the night. The Tigers also rebounded very well offensively finishing with 18 offensive rebounds which is a good sign getting second chance points.
Auburn led late 51-45. This six-point lead would remain until after the under-5 media timeout, but then Auburn would go the next five minutes without scoring a bucket and Cal came back to take the lead.
DeYona Gaston led the way for Auburn with 16 points and 6 rebounds with a pair of steals and blocks. The Senior forward is averaging just over 20 on the year and has been one of Auburns go to scorers offensively.
Taylen Collins helped out Gatson with 13 points and 7 rebounds of her own. Taliah Scott couldn't get much going last night with only 7 points, but the sophomore guard has been exceptional so far this year.
The Tigers battled in this one and hung around versus the undefeated Bears but ultimately the shooting struggles were too much to overcome. If the Tigers can do a better job of finishing inside and taking and making more 3's they will be fine.
The Tigers will travel next to the U.S. Virgin Islands for the Paradise Jam Nov. 28-30. The Tigers will play three games and face Northern Iowa on Thursday, Nov. 28 at 2:30 p.m. CST, Pitt on Friday, Nov. 29 at 11 a.m. CST and Kansas on Saturday, Nov. 30 at 2:30 p.m. CST.
