Auburn women's basketball to face undefeated Cal Golden Bears

After a narrow 70-68 loss to No. 23 Oregon, Auburn (4-1) looks to rebound on Friday, Nov. 2, as it continues its road stretch against the undefeated California Golden Bears (5-0).

Sophomore guard Taliah Scott delivered an impressive 28-point performance in Tuesday night's game, sparking a comeback effort by the Tigers. The team's offensive momentum was stalled by turnovers and foul trouble, ultimately leading to a hard-fought victory for the Oregon Ducks.

“We got ourselves in foul trouble in the first half,” Auburn head coach Johnnie Harris said following the loss on Wednesday night. “We had Taylen (Collins) and Celia (Sumbane) on the bench, then the third quarter we had DeYona on the bench. Taliah put us on her back. I challenged her to be a little better defensively at halftime, and she responded."

Sophomore center Timya Thurman made her 2024-25 season debut for Auburn in the matchup against Oregon. Thurman logged one rebound, one point and one steal in her debut game.

Scott made her 2024 season debut as an Auburn Tiger during the match against Little Rock on Nov. 14 where she recorded 26 points against the Trojans and helped lead Auburn to a 82-48 win.

Powerhouse forward and graduate student DeYona Gaston is a vital part in Auburn’s offensive attacks. Gaston leads the Tigers with 85 points, 21 offensive rebounds and 18 defensive rebounds this season.

Senior guard Mar'shaun Bostic has assisted 22 goals thus far, putting her on track for approximately 138 assists this season. Junior center Oyindamola Akinbolawa has remained a brick wall for Auburn’s defense and has 13 total rebounds.

Akinbolawa and Scott have been perfect from the free-throw line this season, each maintaining a 100% shooting percentage thus far.

Cal, coming off a 86-63 victory against Grambling State (2-3) , is looking to add to its undefeated record in the match against Auburn on Nov. 22. After a close third quarter sophomore LuLu Twidale, graduate student Ioanna Krimili and senior Marta Suárez ignited a 3-point spree solidifying their win over GSU.

The guard trifecta is a dynamic trio made up of Twidale, Krimili and graduate student Kayla Williams. Williams leads the Golden Bears' score sheet with 18 assists. Twidale has recorded 14 3-pointers and leads her team as top-scorer with 69 points.

Auburn will mark Cal's first SEC matchup of the season, creating a notable test at home for the Golden Bears. Cal is undefeated at home, fronting a perfect 3-0 record and a total of 864 points on the season.

Nov. 20 started a trend of broken brackets for women’s basketball. The Tuesday night matches ended Auburn, Arizona, Kansas and Iowa State's undefeated streaks.

Auburn (3-1) continues its stretch of road games, preparing for the Paradise Jam in St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands on Nov. 28-30 on ESPN+. Auburn will face the following three opponents: Northern Iowa (3-1), Pittsburgh (5-1) and Kansas (4-1). Northern Iowa notably beat No. 8 Iowa State 87-75 on Nov. 20, advancing their record to 3-1.
