With Auburn’s star forward Jaylin Williams moving to the NBA in the offseason, the Tigers faced a gap at power forward — one that Chaney Johnson has filled early in the season.
In Auburn's win over Kent State, Johnson had 18 points, five rebounds, four assists and two blocks while also hitting two 3-pointers. Chaney has played well on both ends of the floor this season. He guards positions one through four, rebounds well, runs the floor and can score from all three levels, leading the Tigers to offensive success early in the season.
“All credit to my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ cause without him I wouldn’t be here and able to do what I do," Johnson said. "I just attribute it to my teammates trusting in me and Coach Pearl giving me the ball in the right spots. I’m just making shots.”
A standout moment for Chaney Johnson came around the 10-minute mark of the second half in Wednesday's game. After scoring with a hook shot in the post, Johnson quickly transitioned to defense, where he battled Kent State’s top player, VonCameron Davis, forcing him into consecutive difficult shots.
On the following possession, Johnson secured an offensive rebound off a free throw, keeping Auburn’s possession alive. He then knocked down a three-pointer, before switching onto Davis' backcourt teammate and forcing a turnover. In just a few minutes, Johnson's impact on both ends of the floor was unmistakable.

Johnson’s ability to score and make plays without the ball has been a significant asset for Auburn. However, his notable improvements with the ball — whether handling it, scoring one-on-one in the paint, or hitting midrange shots — have been particularly big for the Tigers this season.
Johnson is averaging 14 points, 8 rebounds, 2.3 assists and over a block per game for Auburn, while shooting an 68% from the field and 33.3% from beyond-the-arc through the first three games. If he maintains this level of play, an All-SEC selection could be within reach.
Up next, Johnson and the Tigers face North Alabama at home on Monday, Nov. 18. Tipoff is at 8 p.m. CST and will be televised on SEC Network.
