A once-undefeated No. 1 Auburn Equestrian team’s comeback bid came up just short of No. 6 Georgia to close their fall season on Friday afternoon.
But Auburn’s effort was unmatched.
“We are disappointed in the outcome, but I’m incredibly proud of this team and how they battled today,” head coach Jessica Braswell said. “Our backs were against the wall most of the day and we never gave up and competed for every point.”
Auburn bested Georgia 3-2 in Fences, with freshman Kate Hagerty starting with another big score, 87-84, giving Auburn its first point. Avery Glynn and Ellie Ferrigno tacked on two more points for Auburn in Fences with Tessa Downey and Jordan Toering giving Georgia its two.
After Fences and Horsemanship, the Bulldogs took an early 6-4 lead heading into intermission.
Sophomore Sydney Swallom got the lone point for Auburn in Horsemanship, defeating Jordan Davis, 75.5-74.
For Flat, seniors Mary-Grace Segars and Sophee Steckbeck earned a pair of victories, and
freshman Ariana Marnell closed the event with an 82-81 win.
Freshman Michelle Fumagalli and junior Alexia Tordoff tag-teamed two points for the Tigers in Reining, making them one win shy of defeating the Bulldogs.
Auburn will return to competitions in early February.
Next up is Minnesota Crookston and UT Martin, February 7-8, at the Auburn University Equestrian Center.
“I have no doubt we will come back from the break ready to get back to work,” Braswell said.
