National player of the year candidate Johni Broome remains day-to-day for the No. 2 Tigers’ upcoming matchup with No. 16 Purdue on Saturday afternoon in Birmingham, AL following his right shoulder injury against Georgia State this past Tuesday
“We got a positive report from the standpoint of no surgery required, no damage,” Pearl said.
The All-American center got his right arm tangled up with Georgia State’s Nick McMullen in the effort to collect his first rebound of the night and immediately ran into the locker room for further evaluation.
“He won't practice today, but you know, he will travel up there, and I couldn't even tell you status, whether it's questionable or not likely. We just don't know. But the good news, it's not a long term problem,” Pearl said.
Broome returned to the bench later in the first half, sitting at the end in a light-blue hoodie with ice wrapped around his shoulder.
During a reevaluation at the half Broome was ruled out for the rest of Tuesday night’s contest, per a team spokesman. Broome then made his way back to the bench during the first timeout of the second half with his right arm in a sling.
“We got a game plan with him and without him, probably more without him, but game plan both,” Pearl said.
In Broome’s absence on Tuesday, Johnson put together a career-high 26 points, shooting 12-for-14 from the field, along with eight rebounds and four assists in 30 minutes of action.
“We won't have as much depth, obviously, and so therefore foul trouble will be a factor,” Pearl said. “I'm sure Purdue, they're not going to change how they play.”
