Redshirt sophomore and former Ohio State transfer Caleb Burton III announced his intention to enter the transfer portal following two seasons at Auburn on Saturday evening – marking the ninth Tiger to enter the portal since the season concluded with an Iron Bowl loss last Saturday.
Burton, a native out of Austin, TX, was a former four-star recruit, per 247 Sports, and committed to play at Ohio State. Following a redshirt season without any on-field action, Burton transferred to Auburn where he spent the next two seasons.
Burton only saw the field in three games for the Tigers this past season; against Alabama A&M, New Mexico and Arkansas. The redshirt sophomore recorded two receptions totaling 49 yards in the season opener and then didn’t have a reception the rest of the season.
In 2023, the former Ohio State transfer saw action in nine of Auburn’s competitions averaging 1.7 receptions per appearance with 14.1 yards per reception. Burton’s season high was in the Tigers’ Music City Bowl loss to Maryland in which he recorded five receptions for 78 yards.
Burton is the second Auburn receiver to transfer out this cycle after Camden Brown.
With Burton on the way out for Auburn, Freeze and his staff will look to the transfer portal for additions to the roster when it opens on Monday, Dec. 9.
