Auburn’s monster second inning propelled the Tigers to their first victory of the weekend in Arlington, TX taking down Ohio State in seven innings.

The Tigers outplayed the Buckeyes in virtually every aspect of the game as they held Ohio State’s lineup to just two hits coming from leadoff Tre Lipsey and his substitute Lee Ellis as well as pouring on 13 runs on 13 hits. On top of everything the Tigers even played a perfect game in the field with zero errors again outdoing Ohio State who had one.

The explosive day for auburn started with Chase Fralick, who went three for four on the day, hitting a bases loaded single at the beginning of the second and from then on it was all Auburn. The game was later broken open by Cooper McMurray’s bases clearing three RBI double to put the Tigers up six. After putting up an eight spot in the second they continued to pour it on the Buckeyes with two in the fourth, one in the fifth, and two in the sixth.

“It was a huge inning for us,” McMurray said of the team’s eight-run second. “Credit to my teammates for getting on base before me. I was just looking for a fastball. He threw one 0-0, and I was able to put a good swing on it.”

The pitching staff for the Tigers did not disappoint either with veteran Samuel Dutton getting six innings of work to start the game. Dutton worked efficiently just facing 21 batters to get his 18 outs, nine of which came from strikeouts getting him to his career high. Reliever Ryan Hetzler came in and shut the door, completing the shut out with a perfect one-two-three frame.

“It was just a clean game,” head coach Butch Thompson said. “I’m not going to stop, and I don’t think the players are going to stop. Can we shove (the ball) in the zone, take the sting out of the swing and try to figure out different things? Samuel Dutton executed a masterful plan today. The offense, it just feels like they’re almost competing amongst themselves for who can have the most competitive at-bats.”

Behind the outstanding pitching performance by Dutton and the breakout offensive inning were eight of the nine Tigers who got on base two or more times via a hit or walk. Fralick and McMurray certainly had great days going a combined 5-9 with five RBI but some other big contributors were Eric Snow who went 2-3  with a walk and has had an outstanding year batting .447 and Bub Terrell who went 1-1 with three walks coming off of his Freshman of the Week honors last week.

“We’re going to play another great team tomorrow, but that’s kind of the goal. That’s what the best do. They don’t just do it one time. They do it consistently,” Thompson said.

The Tigers have run-ruled their opponents three out of the last five games outscoring them 59-13 over that stretch and look to keep their moment going into their remaining games in Arlington, TX. They will take on No. 8 Oregon State in game two on Saturday, March 1 at 6 p.m. CST and Baylor on Sunday, March 2 at 3 p.m. CST.
