No. 1 seed Auburn is set to begin its March Madness run with a matchup on Thursday, March 20 against in-state foe Alabama State. Here's what some of our sports staff has to say about the clash between the Tigers and Hornets, complete with score predictions and analysis.

Patrick Bingham, Sports Editor: Auburn 98-67

"Alabama State is the lowest rated team in several different metric ratings that the Tigers have faced all season. I expect Auburn to have a big day inside of Rupp Arena."

Grace Heim, Assistant Sports Editor: Auburn 89-69

"I think the Tigers' defense will make the difference today against the Hornets. Auburn has struggled on that end of the court in a few of its losses but I don't see that being an issue today."

Logan Fowler, Sports Reporter: Auburn 93-64

"I have a feeling this might be the game we see Chaney Johnson bounce back after not scoring in double figures to close out the regular season and SEC Tournament in the month of March."

Rory Garvin, Sports Writer: Auburn 98-67

"Having lost three of their last four games, Auburn will look to gain momentum early and often in the NCAA Tournament opener. After falling to the No. 13 seed Yale Bulldogs in the first round last March, Johni Broome and company will have something to prove Thursday afternoon.

"Auburn is a total mismatch for Alabama State and it will be visible. Three of Alabama State’s starters stand at 6'3” or smaller. Compare that to Auburn, who’s smallest starter is Denver Jones at 6'4”. Look for the Tigers offense to explode as they are averaging 92.8 points per game this season in seven games against non power conference opponents.

"One player poised to have a big game for Auburn is senior forward Chaney Johnson. Although he has been struggling lately, scoring fewer than 10 points in the last five contests, this is a great opportunity to shift the narrative. If Auburn plans on making a run in March they’re going to need Johnson and today is a great time for his confidence to be restored as he is averaging 13.2 points per game against non power conference competition this season.

"All of Auburn’s players should be able to get their touches in this game and they will leave Rupp Arena Thursday feeling confident heading into the Round of 32 against the winner of Louisville/Creighton."

Charlie Diegnan, Sports Writer: Auburn 104-62

"While it has been done before, don't look for a No. 16 vs No. 1 upset in this one. Auburn will be coming out of the gates firing, proving doubters wrong, and showcasing why they earned the No. 1 overall seed. I expect the Tigers to control this game in all facets and disappointing many fans looking for their Cinderella team this March."
