No. 10 Auburn baseball took down No. 12 Tennessee 8-1 Sunday afternoon, in an unconventional seven-inning affair.
Following a heartbreaking loss in eleven innings just a few hours prior, the Tigers responded in a big way posting eight runs on ten hits, to clinch their sixth SEC series win of the season and first over the Volunteers since 2019.
“We competed like we won all three, if I can keep them away from the result,” said Auburn Head Coach Butch Thompson. “What we’ve been through, it just seems like every challenge that can come our way, we’ve had it and have always just said ‘good’. If we just continue to keep our head down we can gain something from two really well played games.”
After a quiet first two innings, the orange and blue looked to pounce in the top of the third. Singles from Chase Fralick, Eric Snow, and Chris Rembert set the table for Auburn. Cade Belyeu, Ike Irish, and Lucas Steele did their jobs and brought them all home, giving the Tigers a crucial 4-0 lead in a seven-inning game.
On the mound, freshman Christian Chatterton was outstanding, going three scoreless innings and allowing just two hits. He picked up his fourth win of the year.
In the fifth, Auburn had the bases loaded once again and looked to capitalize. The Tigers tacked on three runs to extend their lead to 7-0. Following two bases-loaded walks, Tennessee Head Coach Tony Vitello was ejected from the ballgame.
Rembert and Belyeu led the way at the plate for Auburn going a combined four-for-eight, setting up all of Auburn’s scoring threats.
Auburn southpaw Cade Fisher, who relieved Chatterton, had a great bounce-back start after last weekend giving up just one run in four innings of work, to earn his first save.
“I had a feeling I’d go in this game,” Fisher said. “My approach was pretty simple, just try to throw everything as hard as I could in the strike zone. I had been struggling this year with that, but this game I just felt free and that I could throw the ball wherever I wanted to.”
The Tigers will head home to take on South Carolina in the final home series of the season. First pitch is set for Thursday night at 7:00 p.m. CST.
