No. 6 Auburn baseball dominated Jacksonville State 19-1 in Tuesday’s home finale.
Tonight marked the first time Auburn scored double digits in four straight games since February of 2002.
"We knew the potential and have kind of strived for it all year long,” said Auburn Head Coach Butch Thompson said of the offense. “To see them hook it up, especially now, is a big deal. They've stayed after it for a long time.”
The orange and blue tonight were led by Cooper McMurray and Bub Terrell who combined for five hits and 10 RBIs.
10 different Tigers recorded at least one hit including pinch-hitter Andrew Dutton who launched a 381-foot home run to right field in his first-ever at bat for Auburn. The brother of RHP Samuel Dutton has served as the Tigers’ first-base coach for most of the season.
"The crowd going crazy was a dream come true,” Andrew Dutton said. “It’s what I've been waiting for. It was awesome. The guys have always been super supportive of just me and being the teammate that I am. That’s the biggest thing is just having those 40 best friends who really care about you.”
"It was movie script stuff to me,” Thompson said. “That's what it is all about. That’s the good stuff. You talk about capitalizing on a moment. We had a blast with that tonight. That was a special moment. He’s got that for life, to run around these bases in an Auburn uniform. He’s worked every day to be ready to play the game, and you’re rewarded for stuff like that.”
Auburn continued their early inning success, plating five runs in the first inning behind a grand slam from McMurray, his thirteenth home run of the year.
"When the bases are loaded, the objective is to get a job done early in the count,” McMurray said. “At this point in the season, there are no individual stats that matter. It's all about winning. When the three guys ahead of me get on base, it makes my job a lot easier. I was just trying to get a good pitch and put a good swing on the ball to get a job done.”
On the mound, freshman Andreas Alvarez was terrific going five scoreless innings while allowing just one hit.
In the fourth, Auburn sent 15 batters to the plate and ambushed the Gamecocks for a season-high 11-run inning, extending its lead to 18-0. Runs were driven in by Terrell, Deric Fabian, Eric Guevara, McMurray, Eric Snow, and Chase Fralick.
Parker Carlson and Mason Koch combined to toss two innings of one-run work, as Auburn finished off the Gamecocks in seven innings with the run rule in effect.
Auburn will hit the road to finish off the regular season traveling to Ole Miss. Game one will be on Thursday night and the series will wrap up Saturday night.
