Letter from the Editor | Decide who you are

“You have to decide who you are and force the world to deal with you not with its idea of you.” – James Baldwin

Auburn is a special place to me. Coming in, I wasn’t sure of what I wanted to do with the rest of my life or even who I wanted to be. Really, I’m still not sure, but I do know Auburn has helped shape me.

Thankfully, that’s all a part of going to college: being unsure, nervousness, making new friends, seeing new places, taking different classes — it’s all a fresh start.

In my mind, when I think of fresh starts, I think of James Baldwin. Baldwin lived all over the world; originally from New York City, spending a majority of his life in Europe, specifically Paris. While Auburn and Paris are miles apart,   it’s the best I can do.

Baldwin used his time in Europe to find himself, not only as a writer, but as a person. Similarly, in my four years in Auburn, I’ve found myself. In August 2022, I came into Auburn as an engineer, thinking that would make me happy. Soon, in May 2026, I’m leaving as a writer. Such a big change, but I’ve embraced it along the way and ultimately, I’m much happier.

In the eyes of Baldwin, making this change helped me decide who I am, leaving behind the idea of the old me.

Four years of not knowing what you want to be, where you fit in or even the person you think you are is hard. The world is yours and you should run with it, make Auburn your Paris. I encourage you, dear reader, to decide who you are and force the world to deal with you.
