Smalls Sliders on Opelika Road closed earlier this month after approximately one year in operation, leaving uncertainty about whether the shutdown is temporary or permanent. Google currently lists the restaurant as “temporarily closed,” but community members speculate that the closure may be lasting. However, as of Feb. 16, an updated statement on the Yelp restaurant page states the restaurant is scheduled to reopen on March 10, 2026. No further reason or information has been provided by the company.
The Auburn location of the casual burger restaurant opened in late December 2024, serving sliders, fries and milkshakes. During its time in Auburn, it maintained a 4.1-star rating on Google, with customers frequently praising its service and overall food quality. Some reviews, however, cited concerns about flavor and occasional greasiness.
Smalls Sliders is part of a fast-growing restaurant chain centered on cheeseburger sliders, fries and shakes served under bright-colored modular-designed buildings with a drive-thru and small patio ensuring speedy orders. This particular closure does not reflect the brand’s national success, as Smalls Sliders recently signed multi-unit development deals for expansion in areas like Arkansas and Missouri as it continues to expand nationwide.
Other businesses in Auburn and Opelika have also closed in recent years, as the area has struggled to retain retail and dining establishments. The Downtown Auburn Whataburger location shut down after four years in a space that has frequently seen businesses cycle in and out. In addition, several banks, a CVS Pharmacy, Red Lobster and Mizu Ramen have left vacant storefronts nearby.
The closure of Smalls Sliders has not been confirmed to be permanent thus far, and specific reasons have not yet been disclosed by the company.
Restaurants in Auburn often rely heavily on student-driven demand, making consistent year-round profitability a challenge for many businesses. Customer traffic tends to spike during the academic year and on major sports weekends, particularly during football season, but can slow significantly during school breaks and summer months.
Proximity to campus, accessibility and competition within the city’s crowded dining options often raise concerns for restaurants' longevity in the area.
Residents have speculated on social media about whether the Smalls Sliders closure will be permanent.
A company spokesperson earlier this month declined to provide further details regarding the decision or potential reopening plans.
