In the highest-ranked matchup in Plainsman Park history, Auburn dismantled No. 3 Georgia Tech by a final score of 9-2 to extend its winning streak to double-digits behind explosive bats staying hot and dominant pitching throughout.
“It felt like an SEC weekend,” Auburn second baseman Chris Rembert said following his stellar performance at the plate. “We take every game the same. Just going into it, we had the expectation to execute at the plate and on the mound, and we did.”
Auburn right-hander Andreas Alvarez was lights out against the Yellow Jackets daunting lineup, going 5.0 innings while recording a career high 10 strikeouts, paving the way to record his third win of the season.
“I felt great,” Alvarez said. “Georgia Tech is one of the best offenses in the country, so being able to go out and do that felt good. And then being able to see Chat [Christian Chatterton] and LJ [Cormier] come and do the same thing, it was awesome.”
Georgia Tech’s bats got off to a promising start in the opening frame, as a leadoff walk followed by a single laced through the shortstop hole from Jarren Advincula gave the away team their only lead of the game. Alvarez settled down following the Yellow Jackets' sole run while facing the righty and was able to strike out the remaining threats to prevent Georgia Tech from recording a crooked number.
Auburn’s bats quickly bounced back in their first inning at the plate as back-to-back doubles from Chase Fralick and Bub Terrell evened the game at one.
Alvarez responded with a quick 1-2-3 inning in the second to put Auburn in a prime position to take the lead and the Tigers did just that as Logan Gregorio blasted a leadoff line drive homer to deep right field. However, Auburn was not done plating runs in the second, as Rembert drove in two runs with a monster homer over the War Eagle Wall for his first homer of the season to extend his squad's lead to 4-1.

“It was awesome,” Rembert said on getting his first homer under his belt. “Once I get one, I keep going so it's a great feeling to get the first.”
Both teams' bats went quiet in the third and fourth innings for the first time in this mid-week clash, and Alvarez shut down Georgia Tech in the fifth to keep Auburn’s lead intact. The dominant righty’s final out of his night was recorded in the same fashion as his first, with a swinging strikeout.
The Tigers’ brief scoring drought came to an end in the fifth as Brandon McCraine and Lucas Steele drew back-to-back full count walks with bases loaded to plate the team’s fifth and sixth runs of the ballgame. Todd Clay then continued the momentum and with a hustle infield single to bring in another run and a fielder’s choice drove in McCraine to put Auburn ahead 8-1. The final run of the home frame came courtesy of a deep single from Rembert, but a terrific relay from the Yellow Jackets nailed Cade Belyeu at home and halted Auburn’s rally.
Christian Chatterton entered the game in relief in the sixth inning while looking to preserve Auburn’s 9-1 lead and escaped his first inning of work without allowing a hit, but the sophomore allowed an RBI single in the seventh from Advincula once again which cut Georgia Tech’s deficit to seven runs.

Auburn failed to respond offensively following the seventh inning stretch, but freshman reliever LJ Cormier was able to close out the Yellow Jackets' night while holding their offense to donuts in the final two innings.
Following their impressive victory, head coach Butch Thompson and the Tigers will now set their sights on another heavily anticipated matchup as No. 2 Texas comes to the Plains for a three-game weekend series starting Friday evening.
