After a non-conference slate in which they recorded two wins against ranked opponents and boasted a solid record of 17-6, the Auburn Tigers Softball Team looks forward to hosting the 18-4 Kentucky Wildcats this weekend to begin SEC play for the squad. Kentucky has been on a tear as of late, winning its last twelve matchups after a slow start to the season. The Wildcats dropped three of four games at the Stanford Invitational early last February, including losses to both Cal State Fullerton and No. 18 Oregon, teams Auburn has already defeated this year.
Kentucky’s pitching and defense have been its calling card this season; the Wildcats have maintained a team ERA of 2.32 (7th in the SEC) while only allowing seven home runs in their first 22 games played. Kentucky has been great at attacking the strike zone this season, allowing only 31 walks, the second-best mark in the conference. Their offense, on the other hand, has been their most prevalent weakness. The Wildcats rank near the bottom of the SEC in batting average, runs scored and RBIs. The Wildcats have scored 10 or more runs in a game just four times this season, compared to the Tigers doing so eleven times.
Leading the Wildcats’ pitching staff is their dominant three-person rotation of freshman Hailey Nutter, junior McKenzie Oslanzi, and senior Sarah Haendiges, who have combined for 19 of the team's 22 starts this season. Both Nutter and Oslanzi have posted ERAs in the mid-1.00s to begin the year, and the trio has a combined win percentage of 84%. Kentucky features a very top-heavy lineup, but its greatest offensive threats come in the form of junior outfielder Peyton Plotts and senior catcher Karissa Hamilton. Plotts is the Wildcats’ premier power bat, having already clubbed nine long balls for the team this season. Hamilton is much more of a contact hitter (her 32 total hits this season rank top ten in the SEC), but she is also a threat for extra-base hits, leading the team in both doubles and triples.
While it has been a loaded pitching staff for Kentucky that has led the way for a struggling offense, for Auburn, it has been quite the opposite. The Tigers’ team batting average mark of .352 places them in the middle of the SEC, but they also hold the highest team ERA of any team in the conference, sitting at 4.07. Auburn’s offense has been extremely reliable for power, ranking in the top five in the SEC for extra-base hits and home runs. With this, however, they have also run into some swing-and-miss issues; the Tigers lead the SEC in strikeouts.
As Auburn heads into SEC play, the most glaring weakness the team will be hoping to improve is inconsistency in the field. The Tigers have already racked up 32 combined errors on the year, 11 more than any other team in the SEC.
The Tigers’ pitching woes have not been the fault of starter Ella Harrison. The sophomore transfer from Rutgers has maintained a 2.64 ERA while starting nearly half of the Tigers’ games. Even more impressive, Harrison has gone the distance in nearly half of her starts, having already recorded five complete games this season. On offense, the duo of Florida transfer Kylie Shaw and LSU transfer McKaela Walker has been incredible for the Tigers. Shaw has the third-highest on-base percentage in the SEC this season, reaching base in over 60% of her at-bats. The sophomore’s 24 total walks on the season are also a conference best. Walker, on the other hand, has been showing off an impressive power display this season, having already tallied eight home runs and 24 RBIs in just her first 21 games played.
Make sure to catch your Tigers this weekend as they swing into SEC play to take on the Kentucky Wildcats at home!
