Auburn softball has hit a rough stretch as it heads into the back half of conference play, having dropped its last four SEC series, all by being swept.
The path does not get any easier for the Tigers this weekend, as they are set to hit the road to take on No. 5 Florida.
Since the calendar turned to April, Auburn has seen what was a powerful offense to begin the season take a nosedive. Despite some impressive pitching performances in the Alabama and Arkansas series, the Tigers have not been able to take advantage, scoring only two combined runs in their last six games.
In what has been a stretch of tough opponents for the Tigers, Florida may have the best overall resume of any of them. The Gators currently sit at 41-6 for the year and 14-4 in conference play. The team has also been nearly unstoppable in Gainesville this season, boasting a home record of 22-2. Florida has taken four of its first five SEC series, with its only loss coming in a road series against No. 1 Arkansas. The Gators have slowed down from their 8-1 start to conference play, including a tough home series win against No. 6 Tennessee, but they are still an extremely formidable opponent for the Tigers.
The Gators are one of the most well-rounded teams in the conference this season, ranking in the top five in the SEC in team batting average (.365), pitching ERA (2.51) and fielding percentage (.987). The offense has been especially impactful, ranking second in nearly every major batting category, with the only exception being No. 7 Oklahoma. Florida’s lineup has been full of extra-base machines this season; its total of 94 doubles is 26 more than any other team in the conference.
Leading the ferocious Gators offense is the team’s slugging trio of sophomore outfielder Taylor Shumaker, senior catcher Jocelyn Erickson and senior infielder Kenleigh Cahalan. All three rank in the top five in total hits in the SEC this season, and their combined 38 home runs make up nearly half of the team’s total.
On the pitching side, junior Ava Brown has been almost unhittable this season. The right-hander from Montgomery, Texas, holds a 5-0 record in her five starts this season, while also picking up three saves and maintaining an incredible 0.49 ERA. Florida’s bullpen has been outstanding all season long, with juniors Olivia Miller and Allison Sparkman both holding ERAs under 2.00 while allowing only one home run in 51 combined innings of work.
If Auburn hopes to take this tough road series, it will need its offense to break out of its slump and take advantage of a Florida starting rotation that has shown a propensity to give up the long ball. Florida starters have allowed 33 home runs this season, ranking in the bottom half of the conference. For the Tigers to take down a top-five team like the Gators, the offense will need to be firing on all cylinders.
Make sure to catch the Tigers this weekend as they look to secure an underdog series victory against No. 5 Florida in Gainesville.
