After dropping all three games in a series against Arkansas last weekend, Auburn softball returns home this weekend for arguably its most important matchup of the regular season, a three-game set against rival No. 1 Alabama.

The Tigers will look to break out of a rough offensive stretch as they take on the Crimson Tide. Auburn’s offense was held to just one run across three games against Arkansas, wasting strong pitching performances in games two and three. But against a team as strong as Alabama has been this season, breaking out of a hitting drought is likely to be a challenge.

The Crimson Tide went on a 27-game winning streak to begin the season before suffering its first loss at the hands of Arkansas just under a month ago. Alabama has logged several resounding victories this season, including six top-10 wins and series wins against No. 9 Florida State, No. 3 Arkansas and No. 2 Texas. The Crimson Tide has only one loss to an unranked opponent this season, a 5-2 road defeat at Missouri, but Auburn will hope to turn the tide at home at Jane B. Moore Field this weekend.

Alabama has been an overall well-rounded team this season, but its pitching staff’s dominance has been key to its success. The Crimson Tide has held opponents to one run or fewer in 26 of its 39 games this season, and its team ERA of 1.74 ranks third in the SEC.

Alabama’s starting pitching trio of freshmen Kaitlyn Pallozi and Vic Moten and junior Jocelyn Briski all have season ERAs over one, with Briski and Moten each ranking inside the top 10 in the conference in total strikeouts.

Alabama’s offense hasn’t been quite as dominant as its pitching staff this season, but it has still produced strong results. The Crimson Tide sits one spot ahead of the Tigers at seventh in the SEC in batting, with a team batting average of .348. Its lineup has also been great at producing power, tallying 66 home runs, the third-best mark in the conference.

Leading the offense is the dynamic duo of senior Alexis Pupillo, whose .455 batting average leads the team and ranks fifth in the SEC, and sophomore Brooke Wells, a power threat who ranks in the top 10 in the conference in both home runs (16) and slugging percentage (.971).

Although Auburn’s lineup has struggled of late, it still ranks relatively well in the SEC. The Tigers have drawn the fourth-most walks in the conference with 173 this season. They will need to maintain plate discipline to have success against a dominant Alabama rotation. Auburn also leads the SEC in strikeouts with 183 on the season.

First pitch between the two rivals is set for 6 p.m. CDT Friday.
