On April 27, 2026, the Pentagon released a list of their contracts totaling to $2.2 billion in awards. Among those awards was a $48,994,134 "cost-no-fee indefinite-delivery contract" to Auburn University for engineering research and development that will support the Combat Capabilities Development Command Aviation and Missile Command on Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, AL.
This comes 8 of weeks after the Department of Defense announced Auburn as a potential partner institution and a year after Auburn received $11.4 million in funding for a space defense project through the Missile Defense Agency.
The Aviation and Missile Command is part of a larger company, U.S. Army Combat Capabilities Development Command (DEVCOM AvMC). DEVCOM AvMC is a civilian organization that supports the Army through research, engineering services and development for the Army's missile and aviation programs. Rocket City is made up of 75% private contract jobs regarding research and development, engineering services, aerospace manufacturing, and ship and boat building. With Redstone Arsenal housing almost 150 thousand individuals in these areas.
DEVCPM AvMC has been supporting the Army since 1962, with their mission statement reading, "Our mission is to develop, integrate, demonstrate, and sustain Army aviation and missile system transformation to ensure war-winning future readiness."
Locations for Auburn University's contribution are still being determined, however, the contract comes after Auburn University's establishment of the Auburn University Applied Research Institute, which opened in 2022 in the Cummings Research Park area of Huntsville. Organizations in this area of Huntsville are responsible for over 29 thousand jobs from more than 300 companies. These companies directly support Redstone Arsenal, with 22 of the top 26 government contractors having a location in this area.
Upon determination of locations for work, funding allocations will be decided. The work is expected to be complete on April 26, 2031.
