Fresh off a dominant 14-2 midweek victory over Samford, No. 11 Auburn baseball is set to take on No. 14 Oklahoma at home this weekend as it looks to take its fourth straight SEC series. This series will be the Tigers' penultimate series in Plainsman Park this season, as they are set to go on a six-game road trip the following two weekends.
The Tigers have bounced back well from a tough beginning to SEC play, including series losses to No. 4 Texas and No. 13 Alabama. Since getting swept by the rival Tide in late March, Auburn has gone 6-3 in its last three series, improving to a 10-8 record overall.
Similar to the Tigers, the Sooners also boast a 10-8 conference record this far into the season, with series losses to Texas and Alabama. Oklahoma is currently on a five-game conference winning streak, taking two out of three from Vanderbilt and sweeping Missouri. After a great non-conference slate, beginning the season with a 15-2 record, with key wins over TCU, Texas Tech and Oklahoma State, the Sooners have shown signs of weakness through SEC play, even dropping two non-conference games as heavy favorites against Oklahoma State and Southeastern Louisiana.
The Sooners rank in the middle of the pack in the SEC in a majority of offensive categories, but Auburn has a noticeable advantage in hits (395-359) and batting average (.300-.283).Oklahoma has been an absolute danger on the basepaths; however, its 92 stolen bases on the season so far is the second-best mark of any SEC team.
Leading the Sooners’ offense is the senior outfielder Trey Gambill, whose .510 on-base percentage ranks second in the conference. Auburn will also need to be on the lookout for the power-speed duo of junior Brendan Brock and junior Camden Johnson, who have combined for 16 home runs and 44 stolen bases on the year.
Oklahoma’s pitching has been less than ideal this season, with its team ERA of 4.41 ranking in the bottom half of the SEC. The Sooners have still seen a variety of standout performances this season. Junior Cameron Johnson has been the yearlong ace for the squad. The hulking lefty currently holds a record of 5-1, while maintaining an ERA of 3.43. The Sooners' bullpen has also been extremely reliable, with seven players holding ERAs of 4.0 or lower.
With Auburn’s offensive explosion in the past few weeks, the Tigers have moved themselves into the top five for the conference in batting, holding a .300 batting average. Not only has the team’s offense been incredible, but its pitching currently ranks as the best in the SEC, with a team ERA of 3.27. If the Tigers can continue to keep their strong performances up in front of a packed-out Plainsman Park, they may regain their national top 10 ranking.
Make sure to catch the Tigers this weekend as they take on No. 14 Oklahoma at home in Plainsman Park.
