The No. 6 Auburn Tigers head to Starkville, Mississippi, this weekend for one of their biggest series of the season against No. 11 Mississippi State at Dudy Noble Field.

Both teams are currently sitting at 14-10 in SEC play, making this weekend’s three-game set one of the most important conference matchups of the final regular-season stretch. This series will be crucial for both teams as they look to strengthen their seeding in the SEC Tournament and continue building momentum as they head towards the postseason.

Auburn enters this weekend on a high after securing its fifth straight SEC victory with a road series win over No. 7 Texas A&M. The Tigers won two of their three games in College Station, Texas, further proving their ability to compete in one of the SEC’s most difficult road environments. Auburn now sits at 32-14 overall and has proven to be one of the SEC’s hottest teams as the season reaches the homestretch.

Auburn’s recent successes have been led by its dominant pitching staff, as the Tigers hold a 3.36 team ERA and lead the country in strikeout-to-walk ratio and walks and hits per innings pitched (WHIP). Sophomore pitcher Jake Marciano has emerged as a strong force for Auburn with a 2.26 ERA and 87 strikeouts, and Andreas Alvarez has put up an 8-2 record with 80 strikeouts on the season.

The Bulldogs enter the weekend with a 36-12 overall record and have been one of the SEC’s strongest teams throughout the season. Mississippi State has built its success by combining power at the plate and consistency on the mound.

Offensively, the Bulldogs are batting .306 as a team and have totaled 80 home runs, making them one of the conference’s most powerful lineups. Ace Reese leads the team with 15 home runs and 54 RBIs, and Bryce Chance has been one of the most consistent hitters in all of college baseball with a .363 batting average. Mississippi State’s lineup is certainly one of the deepest that Auburn will have faced this year.

Mississippi State’s pitching has been equally impressive this season. Friday’s starter Tomas Valincius has proven to be one of the SEC’s most dominant arms, entering the series with a 7-2 record, a 2.37 ERA and 92 strikeouts. His expected matchup against Marciano in the opening game could set the tone for the remainder of the weekend and may be a very entertaining, yet difficult, pitching duel.

Timely hitting and bullpen depth could be what makes the difference in these games, as the dominant starting rotations will likely cancel each other out. Whichever team executes better and holds its composure late in these games will have a strong chance to take the series and gain an edge in the SEC standings heading into the postseason.

Game 1 between Auburn and Mississippi State is set for 7:00 p.m. CDT on Thursday night, and it will be broadcast on ESPN2.
