For the past few months, I have been working with Alabama Students Against Prisons, a movement of students and community members across Alabama who oppose Governor Kay Ivey’s private prison plan. We believe that these prisons would be a blight on Alabama, completely failing to address the Department of Justice’s recommendations for how to mitigate the unconstitutional cruelty and violence that mar our state’s facilities. We know that new buildings won’t stop decades of patterns in racism and abuse. Since I began this work, I have been moved every day by the urgency of this mission, largely because Alabama is my home. For the first time in my life, I truly understand what it means for the personal to be political. What I didn’t realize, though, was that this prison plan is not only connected to my state but to my university, too.

At the beginning of 2020, Ada Ruth Huntley made history by becoming the first Black woman to be elected Auburn's SGA president. This was certainly a surprise considering what we all know about Auburn, but the surprises didn’t stop there. About a month after transitioning to take on her role, the University was forced to shut down because of the looming threat of COVID-19.

Nick Eason, a 10-year veteran of the National Football League, has been named the defensive line coach at Auburn, head coach Bryan Harsin announced Wednesday. The former Clemson football captain coached seven years in the NFL after his professional playing career.

Their time abroad also provides them a window of what it’s like to live here. Though many countries look toward America for guidance, some Auburn international students say the U.S. in 2020 challenged their perceptions of what they once felt was a role model nation. They feel events last year bear some similarities to life back home.

Auburn University's core student union building is now known as the Harold D. Melton Student Center. After a resounding "War Eagle" from the namesake himself, Chief Justice Harold Melton of the Supreme Court of Georgia, a banner was lowered signaling the dedication. Behind the banner was signage with the new name installed on the front facade of the building.

Aniah Blanchard’s murder and kidnapping have prompted her family and friends to look to make changes. That includes promoting Aniah’s Law, which would restrict pretrial release on bail for an extended number of violent offenses, and starting the nonprofit organization Aniah’s Heart.

Just under one week before his face-off with Republican candidate Tommy Tuberville in Alabama's U.S. Senate election, Sen. Doug Jones visited Auburn University on Wednesday night for an open candidate forum. The Auburn University College Democrats and College Republicans co-hosted the event with an invitation also extended to Tuberville, who was a no-show because of a prior commitment.
