Former Auburn women's golf All-American, LPGA Tournament player and current Auburn Director of Golf Operations Danielle Downey, 33, died after a fatal car accident in Auburn late Thursday night. "I'm absolutely devastated," Auburn head women's golf coach Kim Evans said. "Danielle meant so much to me, the girls and this program. Not only did she give much of her life to Auburn as a student-athlete and as a mentor to these young women, but she was so instrumental to this team during some tough times over the past year. Danielle was like a daughter to me." A native of Rochester, N.Y., Downey was in her second season serving as the Director of Operations after returning to Auburn to complete her degree. "This is a tragic and devastating loss for Danielle's family, our student-athletes and staff and the entire Auburn family," Director of Athletics Jay Jacobs said. "Danielle cared deeply about people and she was loved by all who knew her. She impacted a lot of lives here as a player and a member of our staff. Our hearts go out to Danielle's mother and father, her sisters and all who knew and loved her. She will be dearly missed." Lee County coroner Bill Harris told reporters Friday the accident occurred on the 300 block of Lee Road 57 around 10 p.m. Thursday night. Fouls and cold shooting plagued the women's basketball team on Sunday afternoon in their second game of the Subway Classic in Minneapolis, Minn. The Tigers finished the day with a 67-54 loss to Minnesota, ending the Tigers' non-conference schedule for the season. "It is hard to get your team rolling when three of your starters are sitting on the bench in foul trouble early in the first half," said Auburn head coach Terri Williams-Flournoy. "Then we did not shoot the ball well at all in the second half. We should have pushed it more in transition, but we just stood out there and took bad shots." Fouls came early and often for the Tigers in the first half as Tyrese Tanner, Hasina Muhammad and Tra'Cee Tanner did not break double digits in minutes played until the second half. Auburn led 9-4 early on, but went scoreless for more than four minutes, allowing the Gophers to take the lead. Minnesota led by as many as six points in the first half, taking a 30-25 lead into the locker room. The Gophers would never surrender the lead, building it to as many as 15 in the second half. Tanner led Auburn with 15 points and four steals. Hasina Muhammad totaled nine points and a team-high seven rebounds. Muhammad and Tanner were both named to the Subway Classic All-Tournament Team. Auburn will return to the court on Sunday, Jan. 5 in its SEC opener at Mississippi State.
