“I kind of told (the team) it’s probably time to adjust some things and to look at some things we’re doing,” said head coach Butch Thompson. “I’m in for whatever type of changes we need to make. I’m going to hang in there with them.”
It was a busy Saturday for Auburn athletics as soccer traveled to take on Louisville, softball hosted a doubleheader, and baseball continued to battle against Ole Miss in the first conference series of the season. Here's a recap of all the action from Saturday.
Ole Miss' Gunnar Hoglund and Auburn's Cody Greenhill both pitched gems on Friday, but an eighth inning home run sealed Auburn's fate in a 1-0 loss.
After the threat of severe weather forced Auburn to move Tuesday's game against Lipscomb to the Music City, the Tigers poured on nine runs in Nashville. Tyler Miller's four RBI and multi-homer day led the charge in a 9-7 Auburn victory.
After winning the first two games of the series against Little Rock, Auburn failed to complete the sweep on Sunday, losing 12-6 to the Trojans. “We really wanted to finish it off today and earn a sweep in the series," said head coach Butch Thompson.
Auburn continued its success against Little Rock with a 6-0 shutout of the Trojans on Saturday.
Led by a five-run fifth inning and nine innings of shutout pitching, Auburn was able to handle Little Rock 7-0 at Plainsman Park on Friday.
Joseph Gonzalez and Hayden Mullins pitched the Tigers to a 6-5 victory over in-state opponent UAB on Tuesday, with all 27 outs split between the two young pitchers.
"The pitching is such a big piece," said head coach Butch Thompson. "That's where most of your scholarships are. That's where games are won and lost. The ability to pitch and finish would have capped off what was a pretty solid ball game we played there until right there at the end. Because it's not like we kicked the ball to give it away. They absolutely hit the ball."
After dropping the series opener, Auburn blew out Boston College 16-1 on Saturday. The game quickly titled in favor of the home team when Eagles' pitcher Emmet Sheehan walked three straight batters, followed by a Cam Hill grand slam.
Auburn gave up four home runs and left 11 runners on base in an 8-2 loss to Boston College on Friday night. "Tough night against a very good ball club tonight," said head coach Butch Thompson.
Auburn baseball will face its second ranked opponent this season as No. 18 Boston College heads to the Plains after a schedule change. "I think our fans are excited," Thompson said. "Back-to-back weekends you feel like the nation’s watching Auburn baseball with an opportunity.”
After originally being scheduled to play Xavier, Auburn baseball will instead host No. 18 Boston College in a three-game series this weekend.
Auburn’s Trace Bright has been named SEC Pitcher of the Week, the league announced on Monday. The honor comes after the right-hander’s performances against Alabama A&M and Texas A&M over the past week.
Sophomore Trace Bright’s career outing for Auburn helped the Tigers notch a 6-1 victory over Texas A&M to finish out the Round Rock Classic. “The game ball definitely goes to Trace Bright,” said head coach Butch Thompson. “Command is the word. He had authority over the mound. He had authority over the baseball. Everybody playing behind him responded to it.”
“We just got off to such a tough start,” said head coach Butch Thompson. “We hung in there against Oklahoma. Today, we just gave the plate away from Jump Street. From the first batter of the day, we gave the plate away.”
Auburn lost its first game of the season on Friday as Oklahoma came back to win 4-3 in 10 innings at the Round Rock Invitational.
Auburn used a 14 run fourth inning to cruise to a 33-0 win against Alabama A&M Wednesday night. The Tigers' 33 runs are the new program record for runs in a game, besting the previous record of 32 runs set in 1994.
Auburn baseball remains undefeated after dominating Alabama A&M on Tuesday. The game ended after seven innings with an 18-2 Auburn victory.
