“We had an errorless day today and the bullpen depth is what reared its head today.” said Auburn coach Butch Thompson. “Their pitcher was the difference today, not the starter that started off so good but the guy that came in right behind the starter [during] the second at bat. He went four and two-thirds [innings], and I thought he took the sting out of our swing and was the difference.”
Auburn dropped the rubber match of the three-game series against Sacramento State, 7-6 in 12 innings, Sunday, Feb. 21, and lost the opening series of the year in the process.
The Tigers took down the Sacramento State Hornets on Friday, Feb. 19, in Plainsman Park to start the 2016 season.
The Tigers, who finished fifth in the division last year, were picked to finish ahead of only Alabama in the SEC West. However, Auburn did have junior outfielder Anfernee Grier named Preseason First Team All-SEC.
With the season only eight days away, Auburn baseball hosted a fan day at Plainsman Park on Thursday, Feb. 11. The event included a facilities tour, free pizza, hot chocolate, a raffle, “Section 111” T-shirts and a speech from coach Butch Thompson.
