The thirteenth-ranked Auburn gymnastics team was defeated by Georgia in their SEC opener Friday night, losing by a final score of 196.800 to 196.075. Late changes and inexperience led to yet another close loss for the Tigers.
The Auburn gymnastics team has concreted its 2017 schedule that features five meets against 2016 NCAA Championship competitors, head coach Jeff Graba announced Friday. The Tigers will compete against 2016 national champion Oklahoma and 2016 national runner-up LSU.

Auburn gymnast Caitlin Atkinson and shot put specialist Valentina Muzaric are among the 2016 NCAA Woman of the Year nominees, the NCAA announced Tuesday. The NCAA Woman of the Year award honors graduating female college athletes who have exhausted their eligibility and distinguished themselves throughout their collegiate careers in academics, athletics, service and leadership. Atkinson completed her senior season with four NACGC/W regular season All-America honors.
The Auburn gymnastics team scored a 195.100 to place fifth in the afternoon session of the NCAA Gymnastics Championship in Fort Worth, Texas, ending the Tigers' record-breaking season. The Tigers started the meet on vault, scoring a 48.9625.
Auburn advanced to the NCAA Championship with a tie for first in the Ann Arbor, Michigan, regional, earning the fifth trip to nationals in school history.
“This class had as big a challenge, if not a bigger challenge in front of it," Graba said. "Last year’s class was great because we were able to break all of those records. With this year’s group, the repeat is often difficult, and then they’ve also done some things that have never been done before. Beating Alabama was a big deal, beating Georgia at Georgia is a big deal. So this class is going to go down as one of the most successful classes that we could have had.”
This season, Atkinson won 14 event titles and four all-around titles, and she is tied for fifth nationally in all-around with an average score of 39.570. She also ranks seventh nationally on beam, while placing in the top 20 on vault and floor.
The Tigers are headed to Ann Arbor, Michigan, where they will compete with No. 7 Michigan, No. 18 Stanford, Eastern Michigan, Penn State and New Hampshire.
The 196.975 is a program-record at the SEC Championships in North Little Rock, Arkansas, and the Tigers will now move on to NCAA Regionals.
Celebrating her last meet in Auburn Arena, Atkinson won the all-around title with a season-high 39.725, along with securing all four event titles.
Both the No. 6 ranking and the 197.120 RQS score are program records, and the five-straight 197 scores mark a first for the program as well.
Seniors Caitlin Atkinson, Lexus Demers and Kait Kluz were honored before their final meet in Auburn Arena, and though some tears were shed, Atkinson was proud that they were able to put the feelings aside and perform.
Since that meet, Auburn has taken the next step in its quest for a second-straight NCAA Super Six berth. The Tigers have posted their four highest scores of the season, including three straight 197's and the first win against Alabama in 117 meets.
Auburn has now been ranked in the top 10 for 21 consecutive weeks, and the No. 7 ranking is the highest Auburn has ever been ranked at this point in a season.
It was yet another record-setting night for the Tigers, as the team set or tied 11 season or career highs and posted its highest road score in program history.
The Tigers posted their third-straight 197+ score in last week's win, and the 197.200 is the fourth-highest score in program history.
