One run not enough as No. 2 Auburn falls to No. 13 Washington

Just hours after knocking off top ranked Oklahoma by a score of 3-2, Auburn battled it out with the Washington Huskies, falling just short in extra innings. A hard fought game ended after 10 innings, with the Huskies walking away with a 2-1 victory.

Auburn was able to get on the board early after three quick walks in the first inning and a wild pitch that allowed Carlee Wallace to get home safely. However, not much more offense was generated after that. The explosive offense of last season was nowhere to be found, with Auburn only managing 4 hits on the night, courtesy of Victoria Draper, Courtney Shea, Kendall Veach and Carlee Wallace. Unfortunately for the Tigers, Auburn was not able to capitalize on the few hits they got, leaving ten runners stranded on the night.

On the flip side, Washington was able to get on base all night with 14 hits. However, a stout defensive performance by the Tigers kept the speedy Huskies from capitalizing on their opportunities. A number of great defensive plays were made by the likes of Kasey Cooper, Morgan Podany, and Hayley Fagan. Washington didn't stop hitting though, finally breaking through in the top of the 7th after a single up the middle drove a lone runner home. Things remained tied at one until the top of the 10th, when Washington was able to break the deadlock with two outs with a flare single into left field to knock home what would end up being the winning run.

Kaylee Carlson put in a solid performance on the mound, only allowing 1 run on the night, and tossing three strikeouts. Makayla Martin, who got the win in the earlier game against Oklahoma, came on in relief for the final two innings.

Auburn continue their stay in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico tomorrow at 1 pm CST when they take on the Nebraska Cornhuskers.
