For those looking to turn up the heat this Valentine's Day, turning toward the kitchen can be an easy way to boost libido and increase sexual desire.
Foods such as oysters, Chile peppers, chocolate and champagne have long been thought to have effects on both male and female libido, according to womensday.com.
The Web site said foods like oysters and wheat germ don't have a direct effect on libido, but rather effect hormones like testosterone and estrogen.
Mary Kathleen Bishop, sophomore in business, said she does believe in them, though she has never tried any herself.
"There's nothing more sexy than eating an oyster," Bishop said. "Just kidding, but seriously I do think that they work."
Chocolate contains essential amino acids that affect the production of the serotonin in the brain, causing a rush of relaxation.
Foods like Chile peppers that cause a sweating reaction affect the whole body, increasing blood flow to all major organs. S t u dents have mixed feelings about whether these proclaimed aphrodisiacs actually have the effects some say they do.
Bishop said in the future, she would definitely try chocolate and champagne, possibly even Chile peppers.
Shannon Kelley, junior in kinesiology, said she doesn't believe in aphrodisiacs.
"I think there is more to it than just that," Kelley said. "There has to be other elements involved to arouse your partner."
Kelley said she had tried chocolate before but couldn't really tell a difference, though she would be open to others. "I am allergic to shellfish so I can rule oysters out, and I don't know about trying Chile peppers," Kelley said. "But Iwould definitely go for some chocolate and champagne."
Many restaurants around Auburn will have a special menu featuring aphrodisiacs this Sunday in order to entice couples out for an intimate evening.
Mike Hoff, owner of the The Yellowhammer Restaurant, said they will feature chocolate, oysters and champagne as part of their menu.
"Champagne and chocolate are always very popular on Valentine's Day," Hoff said. "This is the South and we are into oysters no matter what time of year it is."
Hoff said they always try to keep these popular items on the menu every year, and he plans on being filled up on this Valentine's Day.
