Track and Field Team heading to SEC Outdoor Championships

The Tigers’ track and field team will compete in the 2015 SEC Outdoor Championships in Starkville, Mississippi, from May 14-19, starting at 11 a.m.

The tournament will kick off with the women’s hammer throw and the men’s decathlon and end Saturday night with the women’s 4x400 meter relay.

In the Tigers’ last appearance at the SEC Championships, the men’s team finished seventh with 50 points, and the women took ninth place with 33 points.

Justin Carter broke two records including Juan Lopez’s record of 229-9 in 1996 with a 239-7, and the school’s mark in throwing with a 237-6 and a 239-7 back-to-back.

SEC Champion in 2011 and 2012, Stephen Saenz finished second in shotput with a throw of 65-6.25, and senior D.J. Smith finished with his best meet of the season, clearing 7-01.25 for the second place standing. Teray Smith and Kahlil Henderson placed fourth and fifth in the 200m.

“I feel really good how we are getting better at the right time and that is important heading into SECs,” said Coach Ralph Spry.

The Championships will be streamed on the SEC Network+ and watch ESPN apps Friday, May 15, and Saturday, May 16, and if missed, the recap will be shown May 21 on ESPNU.

“I think we will hit on all cylinders," Spry said. "We have to do some grinding as there are no cheap points at all. Track and field is a unique sport where you have to be good on that day, so hopefully we can capitalize on our consistency that we have had all year long and put up some good numbers.”
