Auburn dropped Saturday’s game to Michigan State 3-0, the second loss for the Tigers at the Cox Invitational in Pensacola, Florida. Their first loss came at the hands of Troy on Friday.
Freshman pitcher Casey Mize showed promise for the future on the mound Saturday, recording eight strikeouts in seven innings. The right-hander out of Springville allowed just two runs, but the Tigers could not get their offense going.
“I was so pleased with Casey Mize," said Auburn coach Butch Thompson. "Getting seven innings in his first start and it’s on the road against good competition. If you had told me we would have scored three runs in two days after the way we have played offense in the early part of the season, I would be surprised. I guess I am after two days of the tournament. Hopefully, Cole Lipscomb can give us a chance to get out of here with a victory and come out and get us off to a good start tomorrow.”
Anfernee Grier was able to record a single in the third inning, extending his hitting streak to 12 games dating back to the 2015 season.
For Michigan State, sophomore Alex Troop was the star of the day as he went 2 for 4 with two RBIs and a home run. Troop also pitched two innings, striking out two batters and allowing only one hit.
The Tigers return to action on Sunday at 3 p.m. against Southern Mississippi.
