Auburn to honor veteran media professionals

Five veteran media professionals have been selected to receive awards at the 2016 Auburn Journalism Honors Awards to be held Sept. 9.

The honorees are Pulitzer Prize winner Rick Bragg; David Housel, former Auburn athletics director; sports journalist Phillip Marshall; long-time news reporter and Auburn journalism faculty member emeritus Gillis Morgan; and Ken Hare, former editorial page editor and managing editor for the Montgomery Advertiser.

Nomination were submitted to a form created by the Journalism Advisory Council. John Carvalho, an associate professor in journalism, said this increased the number of nominees due to more participation.

“One of my duties is to serve as a liaison with the council,” Carvalho said. “The voting process takes about a month. We try to have it done before the spring semester ends so we can spend the summer contacting the winners and getting things planned for the luncheon.”

The annual awards are to be presented during a luncheon at The Hotel at Auburn University and Dixon Conference Center by the Auburn University Journalism Advisory Council. The luncheon and program will begin at 11:30 a.m. Tickets are $50 each.

“The stories of these award winners bring you to tears to see what journalism means to these special people,” Carvalho said.

He also mentioned that this luncheon serves as the fall meeting for the Journalism Advisory Council.

“It brings together the alumni who care about our journalism program the most, and we all meet up after the ceremony,” Carvalho said. “So it's always a special time of the year.”
