CLA adds new Social Work Master's program

Students pursuing a Bachelor of Arts degree in social work can now take their education even further.

The College of Liberal Arts has added a new Master’s Degree program in Social Work at the University.

The Master’s Degree program, or MSW, will prepare students for advanced clinical social work practice with a focus on health and mental health. The MSW program was approved by Auburn’s Board of Trustees in February of 2016 and the Alabama Council on Higher Education in September of the same year.

The program began this fall and is currently in candidacy for accreditation from the Council on Social Work Education.

Graduates of the MSW program will be eligible for professional social work licensure at the clinical level. Social workers usually find employment in mental health clinics, hospitals, nursing homes, hospice centers and substance abuse treatment centers, to name a few.

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration estimates that professional Social Workers comprise the largest group of mental health service providers, more than psychiatrists, psychologists and psychiatric nurses combined.
