On Thursday, the Opelika Police Department announced they had charged Michael Lamar Benford, 27, of Opelika with the murder of Carnelius Douglas Richmond.
Police said Benford turned himself in Thursday morning and was arrested without incident.
At around 1 a.m. on Saturday, OPD responded to a reported shooting at a lounge on Staley Avenue. There, they found Richmond wounded and transported him to East Alabama Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
Richmond was 35 years old and also from Opelika.
Opelika police said the case remains under investigation.
