The Auburn Housing Authority and Auburn Police Department will cohost the seventh annual National Night Out Thursday from 5 - 6:30 p.m.

“I love the community, getting out there and just meeting people,” said Charlotte Mattox, the Family Self Sufficiency Social Services public relations coordinator for the Auburn Housing Authority.

This is Mattox’s fifth year organizing the event. This year it will be held in the Ridgecrest Community and will include several games, activities, putt-putt and a cupcake walk, Mattox said.

"Hoping to combat crime together and show appreciation to our police officers and our residents,” Mattox wrote in the letter to volunteers and organizations.

This gives an opportunity for the Auburn police officers to connect and interact with the families that attend. Parking will be at True Deliverance Holiness Church parking lot, a few blocks down from the event, Mattox said.

“I like the connection that I have with the partnerships ... getting to talk to all the resources and really getting to know our community,” Mattox said.

“The Auburn Housing Authority provides low-income families with housing assistance,” Mattox said in a letter to volunteers and organizations. "We currently have nearly 800 tenants and of those, 408 are children under the age of 17

The event is also asking for school supplies donations for the families.

The police and fire department will be there to show support and interact with the families at the event. Many other organizations will be showing their support, and there will be about 30 vendors.

A few of the organizations supporting this event are the Christian Women’s Job Corps., East Alabama Mental Health, Lee-Russell Council of Governments, True Deliverance Holiness Church, Our House Auburn, Opelika Housing and many more.

“We’re partners with a lot of different churches around here … the Church of the Highlands will be a part of this too,” Mattox said . “True Deliverance will be volunteering two vans to pick up residents from the other sites."

“There will be many more years of events such as these … to grow our community,” Mattox said.

The event will be at the Auburn Housing Authority building at 931 Booker Street. The event will begin at 5:00 p.m. and end at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, October 4.
