A spirit that is not afraid

11 international organizations will be featured at the World's Fair

A variety of international cultures will be represented at the International Student Organization’s World's Fair on Tuesday, Feb. 19, from 6-9 p.m. in the Student Center Ballroom.

ISO focuses on improving multicultural understanding, encouraging positive relationships between students and creating an easy way to ease the process of adapting to campus for international students.

To assist in forming a more welcoming environment, ISO holds several different events throughout the year, including weekly social hours, a peace dinner and the World’s Fair.

The World’s Fair is an annual event that brings several different cultures together in one room to showcase traditional items from their countries. Eleven cultural organizations will be represented at this year’s fair including African, Chinese, Indian and Turkish.

Sumaiya Islam, graduate student in chemical engineering and president of ISO, said the structure of the event will be slightly different this year. Typically, the event has been held on Haley Concourse, but it will be in the ballroom for this year's installation.

“The World’s Fair is an event to promote cultural friendship and education,” Islam said. “This event is the celebration of diversity of the student body."

In addition to the usual presentation of various parts of different cultures, including clothing and handicrafts, this year's event will also include traditional performances showcased throughout the night. The performances will consist of dancing, singing and other group exhibitions in order to further promote cultural appreciation among Auburn students.
