Auburn took on South Carolina Thursday for the second match in a two-match series. The Tigers lost the match 3-1 but set a program record for the most blocks in four-sets with 17.

Auburn kept the sets close throughout the match, trailing by five or less in each loss.

The 17 blocks are the highest number of blocks in a single match for Auburn since 2009.

Auburn fell in set one by a score of 25-22 but came back in set two, winning it 25-21 to tie the match. South Carolina took the final two sets by scores of 25-20 and 25-23, respectively.

The Tigers got off to a slow start in set one and were down by as many as eight points at one point. Seniors Payton White and Lauren Dorrell were able to take over on offense to rally Auburn for a five-point run. The Tigers were able to bring South Carolina’s lead down to two, but attacking errors gave the set to the Gamecocks.

Dorrell was the leader on offense for the Tigers. She secured a career-high 12 kills with a .522 hiting percentage. She was errorless the whole match in 23 attempts. She was also able to put down two digs and four blocks to add to Auburn’s record.

Set two was a showcase of Auburn’s potential as it was the first set win of the season. Auburn was able to go up 18-14 with multiple blocks from senior blocker Jaeden Brown forcing South Carolina into a timeout. The Gamecocks came within one point of the Tigers but kills from juniors Val Green and Tatum Shipes secured the set win.

Set three and four were close as well. Auburn was able to block effectively in set three, but it wasn’t enough to stop the South Carolina offense. Set four, Auburn held its own and tied at both 19-all and again at 23-all. Two kills later from South Carolina resulted in a 3-1 win for the Gamecocks.
