Early Sunday, the Auburn Athletics announced their decision to split ways with head coach Gus Malzahn. Malzahn spent eight years as Auburn's head coach, and three as the offensive coordinator.
After the news of Malzahn's firing, Auburn players past and present took to social media to share their thoughts.
Derick Hall (Auburn DE 2019-):
Man This One Hurts? The Opportunity Presented Before Me Given By Coach Malzahn Is Amazing. Don't Know How This Will Turn Out But Coach Malzahn I Appreciate You‼️ You Will Always Be My Coach
In 2020, l found out something most of these coaches don't care about their players, just the money. Find another college coach to care about their players as much as @CoachGusMalzahn did for us and ill be a fan. Its bigger than a record, its more in a locker-room than a record.
Extremely grateful for the opportunities this man has given me. It has been a blessing to play for such a high character head coach. Thank you Coach Malzahn!? pic.twitter.com/Pe6RoHDtUO
I'll keep my response to a minimum when I say this. But, Gus is actually a GOOD coach. Of course he has his ways but I've PERSONALLY seen him look in the mirror and make adjustments. It wasn't ALL him. You will see that in the near future. Best of luck to him ? & forever WDE. ?
If you don't invest in what's actually needed to make Auburn Football successful, you can hire as many coaches as you want and it won't matter. As things stand, the program is controlled by a small group that doesn't have a clue what they're doing
Coach Malzahn is one of the greatest men I've had the pleasure of knowing and playing for. He's one of the few head coaches left who actually cares about his player's well-being and success. This one hurts. Thank you for everything coach. #WarEagleForever
Coach Malzahn is the true definition of a Servant Leader. There is not a coach out there that loves and cares for their players more. It goes far beyond football.
Thank you @CoachGusMalzahn, for believing in me and giving me the opportunity of a lifetime. I am forever grateful!
Thanks for giving a small town TX kid like me the opportunity coach. U and Mrs. Kristi was always real genuine people. Through all the tough times you never folded! You showed grit through it all. (Family 4 life)
Sad to see Auburn choose a different direction and do that to @CoachGusMalzahn in a year like this one. He was an amazing coach and a player's coach... I know that doesn't mean much to the fans but as a player, it means everything.
Jonathan Wallace (Former Auburn player and coach):
Thankful for @CoachGusMalzahn & @kristi_malzahn and all you have done for my wife and I! You have poured into our lives in so many ways, and we couldn't be more grateful for your time and your care. We love you both dearly! ❤️
Thank you @CoachGusMalzahn for everything you've done for me and for Auburn. Thank you for believing in me and taking a chance on a "track guy" when no one else would. I appreciate everything you have done for the me and the program and I am thankful to play for you??????
