Class of ’28,
Welcome to the Plains. For decades, Auburn has distinguished itself by attracting individuals from all corners of the globe to a town in East Alabama, where friendships become Family. The Auburn Family is woven together from personal stories that embody the true spirit of the Auburn Man or Woman. My Auburn testimony begins right where you are —wide-eyed and pondering what the next four years would hold. It feels like just yesterday. Yet, even then, I sensed I was stepping into something special. Little did I know that legendary moments like the “Miracle at Jordan-Hare" are not crazy occurrences here. It’s Auburn. But before you take your next stride, hold up for a few words from someone who’s sat in your seat.
Find your love of Auburn.
First, actively explore all that Auburn has to offer. We have always been an everything school— academics, campus life, athletics, we have it all. Seek out those open doors and plant seeds that will challenge you to grow. Be encouraged knowing that your journey will be uniquely yours. “I believe in Auburn and love it,” isn’t just a saying around here; it’s a line of the Auburn Creed by George Petrie. This statement may seem simple, but it holds distinct meaning to everyone who walks this campus. Just as every brick of Samford Hall bears its own character, so does every Auburn story as they all revolve around a deep love for the Plains.
Find your team.
Second, take note of the people around you. They, too, are here for a reason. Dive deep into these early friendships. Go to fun events, stay up late talking on a night when you’re tired, grab fast food at 2 AM. It is in these moments when the foundations of lifelong friendships are forged. If you don’t find these connections early, be patient—the Auburn Family will no doubt embrace you.
Find your purpose.
Lastly, I challenge you to live on mission during these four years. Four years may seem like an eternity, but it’s fleeting compared to the rest of your life. However, these years serve as a crossroads in many ways. The habits you form now will shape the Auburn Man or Woman you become. The community here will equip you to go out and share your passions and purpose with the world. In the timeless words of George Petrie, the finest way to serve is, “doing justly, loving mercy, and walking humbly with your God.”
All that to say, I am beyond excited to see all you achieve. Reflecting on over 168 years of excellence, it’s even more amazing to contemplate the next 168. Now is your chapter, we pass the torch to you. As we believe in Auburn, we believe in you. We’re grateful to welcome you into our Family.
