Auburn’s women’s basketball team will look to carry on its recent momentum into Sunday’s home matchup against the Oklahoma Sooners after winning back-to-back SEC matchups against Florida and 21st-ranked Alabama. Oklahoma, ranked No 16 in NCAA women’s basketball, is coming off an upset win against No 2-ranked South Carolina and enters the game with a 3-3 record in SEC play, one win better than Auburn’s 2-4 SEC record. Tipoff is set for Sunday at 1:00 PM CT at Neville Arena in what will be an interesting and electric SEC showdown.

SEC play continues for the Tigers as they return home, seeking their third straight victory at Neville and their second win against a top-25 team this season. Auburn enters this game following a tough road loss to number 5/4 ranked Vanderbilt on Thursday night. Despite being down by 4 at halftime, the Commodores dialed themselves in, and Auburn could not take the lead. Three Auburn players scored in the double digits, including Harissoum Coulibaly, who led the team with 13 points scored. A’riel Jackson put up her best SEC performance yet, scoring 10 points as well as getting 4 rebounds.

Oklahoma enters the matchup with a 15–4 overall record and is coming out fresh off a very impressive win, a 94–82 overtime victory over the second-ranked South Carolina Gamecocks. The Sooners snapped a three-game losing streak with the win and are coming into this matchup with high momentum. Oklahoma ranks among the country’s best offensively, averaging 90.0 points per game, while also leading the country in field goal percentage defense and both offensive and defensive rebounding. The Sooners are led by freshman standout Aaliyah Chavez, who is averaging 19.2 points per game, the 5th best in the entire SEC. Auburn will need to play a strong and aggressive defensive effort to limit Oklahoma’s efficiency and limit their rebounds.

Sunday’s upcoming game marks the third-ever meeting between the two teams in women’s basketball. Each team has one win against the other at their respective home courts. The Tigers last beat the Sooners in 2018 during the SEC/Big 12 Challenge at Neville, winning 95-79 and making 13 three-pointers in this victory. Last season, Oklahoma defeated Auburn in their first meeting as conference opponents 73-71 at the Lloyd Noble Center in Norman, Oklahoma.

With both teams entering Sunday’s matchup looking to improve their standing in the SEC, this game carries extra significance and will surely be entertaining to watch. The Tigers will look to protect their home court and build on their recent success against conference opponents, while the Sooners look to continue their momentum following a huge statement win over a top-five team. Auburn will rely heavily on its defense and its ability to control the tempo against one of the most efficient offenses in the NCAA. Limiting turnovers and playing competitively by the rim will be critical for the Tigers as they look to slow down Oklahoma’s offensive production. As conference play continues to heat up, Sunday’s game presents an important opportunity for the Tigers to make a statement for themselves against another ranked opponent.
